WFW advises Alpiq on major German BESS acquisition in Germany 31 August 2026

Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) advised Alpiq on its acquisition of the Bollingstedt battery energy storage system (“BESS”) project from ECO STOR.

Located in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the facility has a total capacity of 103.5 MW and a storage capacity of 238 MWh. One of Germany’s largest BESS projects, operational since June 2025, its acquisition allows Alpiq to immediately contribute to the integration of renewable energy.

Alpiq is a leading Swiss energy services provider and electricity producer active across Europe. It invests strategically in flexible energy infrastructure to support Europe’s energy transition and supply security.

ECO STOR is a German-Norwegian developer, owner and operator of battery storage projects supporting the decarbonisation and stabilisation of European energy systems.

The WFW Germany Energy team that advised Alpiq was jointly led by Hamburg Corporate Partner Carolin Woggon and Düsseldorf Regulatory Partner Britta Wißmann. They worked with Munich Partner Dr Christian Bauer, Senior Associate Dr Sarah-Sophie Jacob, Associates Tetiana Arkhipova, Philipp Vogl and André Looks on the corporate aspects of the transaction and on regulatory matters with Hamburg Partner Dr Christine Bader, Düsseldorf Counsel Rebecca Trampe-Berger, Managing Associate Dr Julien Lamott and Associate Dr Ruwen Fritsche. Frankfurt Counsel Christian H. Hinzmann and Associate Helena Hopmann provided financing expertise. Hamburg Counsel Tatjana Giutronich advised on real estate matters, with Frankfurt Counsel Manuel Rustler and Associate Alexander Brune providing tax advice.

Carolin commented: “With the acquisition of the Bollingstedt BESS project, Alpiq has taken over one of Germany’s largest operational battery storage facilities. This transaction highlights the growing importance of storage as key infrastructure for a resilient and climate-neutral energy system. We are delighted to have advised Alpiq on this important step in the German energy market”.

Britta added: “Large-scale battery storage facilities are a key component of a secure, flexible and increasingly decarbonised energy system. They make a significant contribution to system flexibility and security of supply and are increasingly developing into a distinct asset class for strategic investors. Alpiq’s acquisition of the Bollingstedt BESS project underlines the growing importance of these assets for the further development of Europe’s energy infrastructure”.
