Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) has advised aventron AG (“aventron”) on its acquisition of the Wölkisch megawatt-class battery storage facility in Germany as part of its strategy to steadily increase its available electricity storage volume. The Wölkisch facility, which has a maximum output of 4.8 MW and a storage volume of 5 MWh, is connected to the same substation in Saxony as aventron’s 12.3 MW Wölkisch wind farm.

The Wölkisch facility’s capacity will initially be used for balancing power, enabling aventron to enter the large-scale battery storage sector, thereby allowing it to focus primarily on opportunities to raise dams at its small hydropower plants whilst relying on large batteries for its wind and solar parks.

Switzerland-based aventron is a holding company that operates ready-to-build and existing water, wind and solar power plants, supervising their construction and operation as well as their financing and operational improvements. aventron is likely to implement further utility-scale battery storage facilities in the future, including equipping large capacity, ground-mounted solar power plants in Spain and Italy with their own battery storage systems.

The multidisciplinary WFW Germany team that advised aventron was led by Corporate Partner and WFW Germany Corporate Services Head Dr Marcus Bechtel, working closely with Regulatory Partner Dr F Maximilian Boemke and Managing Associate Carolin Woggon. Hamburg Partner Verena Scheibe and Frankfurt Associate Manuel Rustler provided tax advice, with Partner Dr Sebastian Baum advising on real estate matters.

Marcus commented: “We are delighted to have advised our long-standing client aventron on their acquisition of this large-scale battery storage facility which represents an important milestone in the implementation of their storage strategy. Being instructed to advise on them on this transaction highlights WFW’s reputation as a market-leader in the German energy sector”.
