WFW advises Vattenfall on UK wind turbine agreements with Vestas2 January 2024

Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) has advised long-standing client Vattenfall on agreements with Vestas-Celtic Wind Technology Limited (“Vestas”) for the reservation of turbine manufacturing capacity, together with exclusivity arrangements, for the Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Zone.

The Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Zone is located off the coast of East Anglia, UK, in the North Sea. Once operational, this flagship development will be among the biggest wind farms in the world, producing enough electricity to power over four million UK homes. With a total combined capacity of 2,760 MW, it will potentially feature up to 184 V236-15 MW turbines supplied by Vestas.

Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest producers and retailers of electricity and heat with its key markets in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK. Owned by the Swedish state, it is also one of Europe’s leading offshore wind developers.

Founded in Denmark in 1945, Vestas is the world’s largest manufacturer, seller, installer, and servicer of wind turbines, active across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

The WFW London Projects team that advised Vattenfall comprised Partner Martin Lucas and Senior Associate James Fryer.

Martin and James previously advised Vattenfall regarding their agreement with Siemens and Aker Solutions to deliver grid connection infrastructure for the Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Zone.

Martin commented: “We’re delighted to have been able to help Vattenfall secure agreeable terms under challenging market conditions for another agreement key to getting the Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Zone up and running. Our ability to do so is further testament to our unique expertise and experience advising on big ticket offshore wind projects both in the UK and across Europe”.
