Sven Fretthold

Sven is a Partner in the Banking & Finance group of Watson Farley & Williams based in Hamburg. He is also part of the Project and Structured Finance practice.

Sven acts for lenders, sponsors and borrowers in domestic as well as international project financing and reals estate finance transactions. He specialises in the renewables sector and in public private partnership projects (PPP).

Sven regularly advises lending groups on complex and large scale financings of offshore wind farms. He also advises on structured financings of infrastructure and real estate projects.

    Sven’s experience includes advising:
    • A consortium of banks consisting of KfW IPEX-Bank, Natixis, Banco Santander, CIBC, Commerzbank, Helaba, National Bank of Canada, Rabobank, Société Générale and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, as lenders on the €988m financing of the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm project.
    • A consortium of banks, consisting of KfW, Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen Girozentrale (Helaba), ING Bank, a branch of ING-DiBa AG, KfW IPEX-Bank, Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. and SEB AG, as lenders on the financing of the Trianel wind farm project Borkum II with lending commitments amounting to up to €723m in total.
    • A consortium of international banks, consisting of Banco Santander, Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, KfW, KfW IPEX-Bank, Natixis and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation on the financing of the offshore wind farm project ”Veja Mate” (400 MW) with a financial volume of more than €1bn.
    • EWE AG on the joint venture for the development of the second stage of the German wind farm “Borkum West II”.
    • Refinancing of the Tank & Rast roadside service station operator, comprising a senior credit facility, senior second-lien high-yield bonds and a PIK facility.
    • European branches of Gibson Brands, a world leading producer of guitars and music equipment, on its corporate financing by means of factoring and asset based lending.
    • J. H. Gustav Burmeister GmbH & Co. as builder on the financing of the “Süderfeld Park”, a large scale residential project in Hamburg-Lokstedt.
    • An international banking consortium of 18 banks, including, inter alia, NORD/LB, KfW IPEX, Société Générale, DEXIA and EIB on the financing of the offshore wind farm project ”Global Tech I” (400 MW) with a financial volume of more than €1 bn.
    • An international consortium of Lenders led by Dexia Crédit Local and KfW-IPEX on arranging project financing for WindMW GmbH in relation to the German offshore wind farm project “Meerwind”, with a total capacity of 288 MW and a total investment volume of €1.2bn; and subsequent advice to the Facility Agent.
    • Ewz – Zurich Municipal Electric Utility on the acquisition of a 5 per cent share in the 288 MW offshore wind farm “Butendiek” in the German North Sea, including structuring of a virtual power production unit agreement and re-negotiating of project contracts.
    • A consortium of successful bidders in relation to the tender process, the construction, financing and operation of the proton-therapy centre in Kiel, Germany. The largest health PPP in Germany to-date, voted »European Health-Care-Deal of the Year 2008« (Project Finance).
    • Ewz – Zurich Municipal Electric Utility and Aquila Capital on the acquisition financing of 29 wind energy plants from the listed Swedish wind farm developer, Eolus Vind AB.
