Shusuke Fukunaga

Shusuke Fukunaga is a Partner in the firm’s Assets & Structured Finance group based in Tokyo.
Shusuke is a licensed Japanese lawyer (Bengoshi) and is also admitted as Solicitor in England & Wales.
Shusuke has extensive experience in a broad range of banking and finance transactions (both domestic and cross-border) with a focus on aviation and maritime asset finance. He frequently advises banks, trading houses, leasing companies, ECAs and other financial institutions as well as corporate investors on wide-scale cross-border transactions. He offers clients with commercially balanced high quality legal services.
Shusuke is well regarded by clients and peers in the Japanese market and has been commended by legal directories such as Chambers and Legal 500 in relation to Asset Finance and Banking practices in Japan.
Before joining the firm, Shusuke had spent 8 years with Clifford Chance, including secondment to Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities, and also worked at White & Case for 6 years. He is one of the founding members of the firm’s Tokyo office, Watson Farley & Williams (Gaikokuho Kyodo Jigyo Horitsu Jimusho).
- Advising major Japanese banks, trading houses, leasing companies and specialist funds in relation to the lease restructuring during the COVID pandemic time for a number of airlines and lessors including Virgin Australia, Nordic Aviation Capital, LATAM, Garuda, Norwegian Air Shuttle, etc (2020-2022).
- Advising Japan Bank for International Cooperation on its US$1 billion loan facilities for SMBC Aviation Capital (2019).
- Advising Bank of Communications, China Construction Bank and Development Bank of Japan as lenders on JOLCO of one Boeing 787 aircraft and two A320 aircraft leased to Juneyao Airlines (2019-2020).
- Advising a Japanese major airline on operating lease transactions involving several A320 aircraft.
- Advising international aircraft lessors on its BEPS-related lease restructuring and refinancing with Japanese airlines.

- 国際協力銀行によるSMBC Aviation Capitalへの10億米ドル規模のローン融資枠供与に関する件についてレンダー側で助言を提供（2019年）
- 交通銀行、中国建設銀行および日本政策投資銀行をレンダーとする中国吉祥航空向けのリースに係るボーイング787型航空機およびエアバスA320型航空機のいわゆるJOLCO案件においてレンダー側で助言を提供（2019年～2020年）
- 多数のA320型航空機を対象とするオペレーティングリース取引において大手日系エアラインに助言を提供
- 日系エアライン向け航空機リース取引のBEPS関連のリストラクチャリングおよびリファイナンス案件において大手国際的リース会社に対して助言を提供
