Leading maritime practice
Watson, Farley & Williams was the first international law firm to set up in Greece, in March 1984 – a logical move for ship finance specialists. Our long-standing experience here allows us to offer a unique understanding of the market, providing English and Greek law capability. As is to be expected in such a historic maritime location, the accomplished lawyers in our Piraeus office focus on maritime law, working for shipowners and their financiers.
The firm opened additional premises in Athens office in 2007 to offer broader services to the Greek market. The office is located on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue in the centre of the city.
The commercially-minded lawyers in our Athens office focus on providing effective advice in the areas of corporate and finance law, particularly regarding investments. While they support clients in a number of industries they specialise in energy, particularly renewables.
The shipping team has earned numerous accolades; recent recognitions include a nomination for Best Overseas Office in The Lawyer European Awards 2010, and citations in Chambers Europe and Legal 500 EMEA, some of which describe us as “a heavyweight shipping practice” and an “excellent shipping finance firm” with a “commercial and prompt”’ approach and “excellent knowledge of foreign and domestic shipping markets.”
The work of the Greek-law team is highly commended by independent sources. For example, partner Virginia Murray is ranked as a leading individual in Chambers Europe 2010, which describes her as “an excellent practitioner with great experience of the Greek market and the support of a strong team.” In the Legal 500 EMEA guide 2010, the office is said to field a “proactive”’ team that delivers “fantastic, prompt and thorough service on a consistent basis”.
