Sam is a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution group in the London office of Watson Farley & Williams.

He has experience in international dispute resolution in both arbitration and litigation in various commercial sectors including the shipping, energy, real estate and construction industries. Sam has experience of international arbitrations under the majority of the major arbitration codes and has also conducted arbitrations under various regional codes such as the KLRCA (Malaysia), SIAC (Singapore) and TAI/BOT (Thailand). Sam has also acted as lead advocate on arbitrations in Thailand and Singapore.

Sam joined Watson Farley & Williams as a trainee solicitor in the firm’s London office in 2007. Upon qualification in 2009 he joined the International Litigation Group in Bangkok. After six years working in Thailand, Sam returned to the London office in 2015.

Experience Open

    Sam’s experience includes:
    • Acting for PTT Public Company Ltd (the largest company in Thailand) in a dispute in the TCC against an American software company. The dispute concerned the failure to provide a commodities (petrochemicals and hydrocarbons) and trading risk management systems that met the required specification.
    • Acting for a Luxembourg company involved in the photovoltaic energy sector against the Italian Republic in an ICSID arbitration arising under the Energy Charter Treaty concerning losses resulting from changes to the tariff regime originally implemented to incentivise investments in the PV energy sector.
    • Acting for a technology provider in an LCIA arbitration against an African state bank. The dispute concerns the wrongful termination of a build-own-operate-transfer agreement for the provision of a multi-functional payment system aimed at integrating the banking sector of the country concerned.
    • Acting for a major international bank in three commercial court actions against Greek shipping companies for the recovery of outstanding sums under various loan agreements.
    • Acting for construction companies in disputes arising out of various forms of JCT contracts. The disputes involved complex issues of variation, valuation and termination of contract as well as interpretation of technical payment mechanisms.
    • Acting for a water service company in a dispute with several construction companies regarding damage to public sewers.
    • Acting for a client in an arbitration over a shipbuilding dispute.
    • Acting for a Thai petrochemical public company in an LMAA dispute over a contract of affreightment.
    • Case managing an action against an agricultural company concerning the non-payment of commissions for the importation of sugar.
    • Acting for a publicly listed palm oil producer in a US$32m arbitration, under the ICC Rules, against a Malaysia based industrial boiler company’s failure to meet its contractual obligations, causing significant loss to our long-standing client.
    • Acting for a large Thai power-producing company in relation to a dispute concerning the construction of the world’s first 150MW biomass power plant.
    • Lead advocate in a Thai Board of Trade arbitration for property investors concerning a luxury development in Phuket, Thailand.
    • Lead advocate in an UNCITRAL consolidated arbitration in Singapore (SIAC) for a group of 18 property investors based in the UK concerning a dispute over construction of a luxury resort in Koh Samui, Thailand.
    • Obtaining a freezing injunction for a Thailand based company in the Commercial Court. The application involved a complex cross-border dispute with defendants in the UK, Thailand, India and Canada.
