Summary Open

Malte is Co-Head of the Global Energy and Infrastructure sector and a Partner in the Corporate group of Watson Farley & Williams, based in Hamburg. He specialises in M&A transactions, corporate restructurings and corporate finance, with a particular focus on private equity transactions and investments in the energy and infrastructure sector.

Recent transactions include strategic M&A deals in the energy and infrastructure sector, such as the development, the financing, the acquisition or disposal of wind farms (onshore and offshore). His clients include investors, project developers and banks.

Malte is recognised as a leading lawyer in the renewable energy space by legal director Chambers Europe who note that clients praise him as an “excellent negotiator with very good market overview” and “fantastic at wind and offshore wind”.  He was also recently confirmed by respected sector publication A Word About Wind, as part of its Legal Power List 2018 which recognises the world’s 100 most influential lawyers to the wind industry.  Malte is also cited in the JUVE Handbook 2017/2018 as a leading lawyer for energy related transactions and financings in the area of renewable energy.

    Malte’s experience includes advising:
    • A consortium of banks consisting of KfW IPEX-Bank, Natixis, Santander, CIBC, Commerzbank, Helaba, National Bank of Canada, Rabobank, Société Générale and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, as lenders on the €988m financing of the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm project.
    • PNE WIND AG on the sale of 80% of PNE’s shares in its 142 MW wind farm portfolio to a fund managed by Allianz Global Investors GmbH, with a total enterprise value exceeding €330m.
    • A consortium of international banks on the financing of the 400 MW offshore wind farm Veja Mate in the German North Sea with a total financing volume of €1.275bn.
    • STRABAG OW EVS on the sale of the Albatros offshore wind park to EnBW.
    • Dutch Infrastructrure Fund (DIF) on the sale of nine German onshore wind farms to Allianz Renewable Energy Fund.
    • PNE WIND AG on the sale of Gode Wind I, II and III, one of the largest offshore wind farm project portfolios in Germany, to DONG Energy Wind Power A/S.
    • An international consortium of lenders led by Dexia Crédit Local and KfW IPEX on arranging project financing of the German offshore wind farm project Meerwind, with a total capacity of 288 MW and a total investment volume of €1.2bn.
    • Swiss energy trader Axpo Group on the sale by its subsidiary Volkswind GmbH of a French wind park portfolio with a total investment volume of €120m to Germany’s CHORUS Clean Energy AG.
    • KfW IPEX, Dexia Crédit Local, Société Générale, Nord/LB, EIB and other commercial lenders on the financing of the offshore wind farm project Global Tech I with a total capacity of 400 MW and a debt volume of more than €1bn.
    • PNE WIND AG on the acquisition of a 83% stake in WKN AG, Husum, from Siemens Project Ventures GmbH and Volker Friedrichsen Beteiligungs GmbH.
    • Union Investment, a German fund manager, on various acquisitions of onshore wind farms in Germany and Ireland.
    • PNE WIND AG on the acquisition of the three offshore projects Aquamarin, “Bernstein” and “Citrin” with a combined capacity of 1200 MW from BARD Engineering GmbH.
    • A European infrastructure fund on the sale of an onshore wind farm portfolio consisting of five wind farms with a total capacity of 72.5 MW.
    • PNE WIND AG on the sale of seven onshore wind farms with a total capacity of 53 MW to EnBW Erneuerbare Energien GmbH.
