Maren Brandes is a Partner in the Banking & Finance Group of Watson Farley & Williams LLP in Hamburg. She co-founded the Hamburg office and has since been heading the Shipping Finance Group. She is qualified as a German lawyer and was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2003. Since 1998, she has been a qualified lawyer, advising on all matters related to ship finance.

Maren Brandes mainly assists German and international banks on ship finance matters, including syndicated loans, ECA-backed loans, lease structures and restructuring and enforcements.

Other experience includes shipyard-related matters, marine insurance, sale and purchase, cruise and dispute resolution.

Maren speaks English and German and has basic knowledge of Spanish and French.

    • German and international lenders on numerous new-build and second-hand tonnage financings.
    • A German bank in relation to portfolio transfers.
    • Commerzbank AG in relation to the sale of a large portfolio of shipping loans worth €280m to Oaktree Capital Management.
    • Commerzbank AG in relation to the sale of its ship restructuring platform HSAM GmbH comprising a portfolio of 18 vessels in a structured bidding process.
    • German banks in relation to Japanese Operating Leases for container boxes and ships.
    • A banking syndicate co-ordinated by Crédit Agricole, DNB, HSBC and UniCredit, relating to the signing of an ECA-backed US$372m syndicated loan facility for Hapag-Lloyd.
