Watson, Farley & Williams (“WFW”), a leading international law firm, is pleased to announce that it has appointed partner Dr. Marcus Bechtel as head of WFW Germany.

Marcus replaces Lothar Wegener following the election of Lothar and Chris Lowe, the head of the firm’s global Maritime practice, as joint Managing Partners.

Marcus joined the firm in 2006 as a partner in the Hamburg office, specialising in M&A, joint ventures and project development transactions, in particular across the energy and infrastructure sector. He has been an integral part of the energy team, which has been ranked the leading firm in Germany in this sector for the past three years by legal publishers Chambers and Partners.

WFW Germany has seen a rise in revenues in excess of 40% over the last three years, added a Frankfurt office to its Hamburg and Munich offering, and has seen an increase in the number of fee earners in Germany to more than 65. German legal publisher JUVE described the WFW team as having “an almost unrivalled presence in a market where many other firms aspire to be: the lucrative but notoriously difficult Hamburg market.”

WFW has been shortlisted as International Law Firm of the Year at the Lawyer European Awards in 2014, an award the firm won in 2012 with an outstanding contribution from WFW Germany.

Lothar Wegener, managing partner at WFW, said: “I have known Marcus since 1998, well before both joining WFW in 2006. I am very confident WFW Germany will benefit greatly from his considerable experience and look forward to working with him in that capacity.”

Marcus Bechtel, head of WFW Germany, said: “I’m delighted to be taking on the role and look forward to continuing to build on the successful foundations laid in Germany.”
