WFW advises Tank & Rast on cooperation with McDonald’s

7 August 2015

Watson Farley & Williams has advised the Tank & Rast group (“Tank & Rast”), a leading provider of German motorway service areas, on the conclusion of a five-year agreement aimed at considerably expanding the existing cooperation between McDonald’s Deutschland and Autobahn Tank & Rast GmbH by opening more than 100 new McDonald’s restaurants in suitable locations along the motorway network.

The joint goal of expanding Tank & Rast’s network by more than 100 new McDonald’s concept sites within the life of the new agreement represents a vast expansion for McDonald’s Germany, which currently operates only 12 restaurants at service areas alongside German federal motorways.

McDonald’s is one of the best-known brands in the world and opened its first restaurant in Germany on Martin-Luther-Straße in Munich in 1971. With more than 1,480 restaurants throughout Germany, McDonalds is the market leader in the German gastronomy sector. More than 85 % of the McDonald’s sites in Germany are operated by independent entrepreneurs, who act as representatives of the brand in their local market.

Autobahn Tank & Rast is a leading provider of gastronomic, retail, hotel and fuel services on German motorways, operating a network of motorway service areas including 350 petrol stations, around 390 restaurants and 50 hotels. Their facilities are used by up to 500 million motorway travelers per year.  About 200 service areas and four hotels are operated under the Serways logo, Tank & Rast’s service brand.

The WFW team was led by Frankfurt-based partner Dr. Torsten Rosenboom (Corporate/M&A). He was supported by associates Sebastian Ens, and Dr. Pascal Unger (Banking & Finance, Hamburg).

Dr. Torsten Rosenboom commented: “We are very pleased to advise Tank & Rast in this strategically important transaction.
